Frequently Asked Questions
Can a person die during a seizure?
Most seizures are not fatal. However, prolonged seizures, serious injuries, breathing problems or certain types of epilepsy can be dangerous. A seizure lasting 5 minutes or more requires emergency medical attention.
Can epilepsy be cured?
Some people become completely seizure-free, sometimes for many years. Whether treatment can eventually be stopped depends on the individual's diagnosis and should only be decided by a specialist.
Should epilepsy medication be stopped when seizures stop?
No. Stopping medication suddenly can trigger seizures and may be dangerous. Any change in medication should be made under medical supervision.
Can children with epilepsy go to school?
In most cases, yes. Children with epilepsy can attend school and participate in many normal activities. Teachers and caregivers should know basic seizure first aid.
Is epilepsy hereditary?
Some forms of epilepsy have a genetic component, but having a family member with epilepsy does not necessarily mean that another family member will develop it.
