How to know if a person is obese?

Obesity is calculated by a method known as BMI or the Body Mass Index. It is a simple mathematical calculation that uses a person’s height and weight to reach a number

BMI = kg/m*m

The weight of a person in kilograms is divided by twice his height in meters. If a person’s BMI is 30 and above, he is considered obese. India is the third most obese country in the world.

When to opt for Bariatric Surgery?

Obesity is a disease of the new age that brings with it other medical complications like Diabetes, High Blood Pressure, Ischemic Heart Disease, Arthritis, Infertility, etc.

If all nonsurgical weight loss programmes have failed to give reasonable results for consistent weight loss, especially in a patient with BMI > 40.

Surgery can play a major role in long term consistent weight loss and a significant reduction in comorbidities.

Types of Bariatric Surgery

Although there are 9 types of bariatric surgeries in India only a couple of them are most common:

Sleeve Gastrectomy: This is a restrictive procedure where the stomach is narrowed so that the volume of food ingested goes down. It is also known as gastric sleeve, vertical sleeve or tube gastrectomy. It is a laparoscopic procedure where the patient can start oral feeding within 24 hours and will be discharged in about 3 days.

Gastric Bypass: This is a combination of two techniques: restriction and mal-absorption. A smaller stomach is created using staples that restrict the amount of food ingested and a large portion of the small intestine is bypassed to restrict the absorption of calories. This makes the patient feel fuller quickly and the calories absorbed are also less due to the bypass created in the small intestine.
